  2. Dominant Trait • If an organism has one factor for a dominant trait, that trait appears

  3. Recessive Trait • A recessive trait appears only if an organism has two factors for the trait. • If both a dominant and recessive trait are present, the dominant trait appears

  4. Genes • The part of a chromosome that contains DNA. • DNA provides detailed instructions to the cell about every function of life • A gene for a particular trait is found at a specific place on a chromosome. • All inherited traits are controlled by genes

  5. Instincts • A behavior that an organism inherits. • They are passed from parents to their offspring • Ex: building shelters, caring for young, and finding food

  6. Environmental Influences • Environment: everything in an organism's surrounding that affects • Ex: water, soil, air, weather, landform, and other living things • If the environment changes it can cause the organism to change • Ex: fences cause animals to have to move and find new resources
