I. Rule/Uses of possessive adjectives: • There are to types of possessive adjectives in Spanish. b. Stressed possessive adjs. are placed after the noun they modify and agree in number/gender with the noun. They are used with definite or indefinite articles. They are used for emphasis.
I. Rule/Uses of possessive adjectives: • Stressed possessive adjs. are different because they put a stress on the possessor, not the thing possessed. Ex: “mi amigo” = unstressed poss. adj. w/emphasis on “amigo” (thing possessed) Ex: el amigo mi’o = stressed poss. adj. w/emphasis on “mi’o” stressing possessor
I. Rule/Uses of possessive adjectives: • Following a noun, suyo (a, os, as) may have several meanings: your (form), his, her, its, or their. For clarification it can be replaced with the following: de + el, ella, Ud., ellos, ellas, Uds. Ex: su libro = el libro de Juan el libro suyo = el libro de el

Examples of possessive adjectives: Ex: mi amigo vs. El amigo mi’o mis plumas vs. Las plumas mi’as Ex: tu bicicleta vs. La bicicleta tuya tus libros vs. Los libros tuyos Ex: su maleta vs. la maleta suya sus cuadernos vs. Los cuadernos suyos Ex: nuestra casa vs. La casa nuestra nuestros padres vs. Los padres nuestros *agree w/item possessed not possessor
II. Examples of possessive adjectives: Ex: Yo conoci’ a tu hermana. = Yo conoci’ a la hermana tuya. Ex: Sus libros estan en la mesa. = Los libros suyos estan en la mesa. Ex: Mi bicicleta es nueva. = La bici mi’a es nueva. Ex: Nuestros amigos viajaron el verano pasado a Mexico. = Los amigos nuestros viajaron el verano pasado.
III. Note with SER and possessive adjectives: *The article is usually omitted after the verb SER when referring to people. Ex: Ellas es amiga mi’a. Ex: Ellos son amigos mi’os. Ex: Laura es tia mi’a. Ex: Pedro y Raul son hermanos mi’os. vs. Ex: Las clases mi’as son por la manana y las clases tuyas son por la tarde.
Practica: Rewrite the following sentences changing from the unstressed poss. adj. to a stressed poss. adj. ex: Mi casa es nueva. = La casa mi’a es nueva. • Yo estudie’ ayer con tu primo, Jose’. • Mari’a puso sus libros en la mochila. • Los chicos compraron sus zapatillas en el centro comercial. • Nuestra madre cocina muy bien. • Nosotros practicamos el espanol con su profesor ayer. • Donde esta tu pasaporte?

IV. Rule/Uses of POSSESSIVE PRONOUNS: • Possessive Pronouns: fewer words to say the same thing as poss. adjs. a. Stressed possessive adjs. are also used as poss. pron. by omitting the nouns they accompany. b. The def. art. and the poss. pron. agree in number and gender with the omitted noun, thing possessed.
Examples of Possessive Pronouns in use: Ex: La bici mi’a es mejor que la bici de Pablo. La mi’a es mejor que la de Pablo. (mine) Ex: El amigo tuyo esta’ en la historia. (your friend) El tuyo esta’ en la historia. (yours) Ex: Los lapices suyos estan en la mesa. (his/her, their pencils) Los suyos estan en la mesa. (his, hers, theirs) Ex: Las clases nuestras son grandes. (our classes) = Las nuestras son grandes. (ours)
Practica: Rewrite the following sentences changing from the poss. adj. to the A. stressed poss. adj. and then to the B. poss. pronoun: • Yo no fui a la fiesta de Elena ayer. • Mis discos son mas nuevas que tus discos de rock. • Nuestro profesor de espanol es inteligente. • Los padres de ellos son mas simpaticos que mis padres. • El coche de Juan funciona mejor que tu coche vieja. • Pagamos un mil de dolares por nuestras vacaciones a la playa en Cancun.
