  2. Outlines are useful to organize information for study notes or for report notes.

  3. Why use an outline? • To remember important information from a reading assignment • To study textbook material for a test • To record information for a report, for research, or for an essay • To practice finding main ideas

  4. Outline Tips • Write down the main points • Put information in your own words without changing meaning. • Textbook notes follow textbook organization title of notes: chapter title main topics: bold headings sub-topics: important details from paragraphs

Parts of an Outline - continued • Main topic = written with Roman numeral, period, first letter only capitalized – unless a proper noun or proper adjective (I.) • Sub-topic = indented under main topic and labeled with capital letter, period, capitalize first letter. (A.) • Details = indented under sub-topic, labeled with Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3…), period, begin with capital letter. (1.)

  8. Be sure that your letters and numbers line up exactly below the first letter of the word above it.
