Diana Asmar, HWU To speak at rally for “No Sale” of aged care on 29 October Diana Asmar became Secretary of the Health Workers Union in 2012. Talking of privatisation in aged care in September 2013, Ms Asmar said, “What we are seeing is essentially privatisation by stealth – and it is destroying public health services” “The funding model currently employed by the federal government has created a situation where aged care residents are being enticed to private facilities by glossy brochures and other superficialities – and when they move, so does the funding”. “But when you scratch away the shiny surface of these facilities, we are seeing that private facilities more often than not fall short on the provision of their primary responsibility – the provision of care to their residents.” Unlike public aged care facilities, those in the private sector are not subject to carer-patient ratios, meaning that the proportion of residents per staff member is on average much higher.” – Diana Asmar RALLY for “No Sale” of Monash/ Elizabeth Gardens 7 pm, TUES 29 Oct Monash City Council Chambers, 293 Springvale rd, Glen Waverley
