The Great Migration • Mass movement of southerners to the north • From 1900 to 1970 • Both white and black migrants • White and black migrations parallel and mirrored each other but had differences • Time period of World Wars I and II, Great Depression and Civil Rights movement • Great Migration affected entertainment, religion, music, sports, job opportunity and housing
White Migration • Massive migration 2 decades following Civil War • Well educated • Took professional and skilled labor jobs • Stereotype of Anti-union and for being against blacks • Prejudice-hillbillies • Not as well known-many returned • Photo from The Southern Diaspora-of workers coming to work
Black Migration • Black migrants came in a massive movement in 1915 to 1965 • During the world wars • Came for push and pull reasons • Only 1/3 blacks returned to the south • Was a leaderless movement

Pull Factors • Allowed rights • Work in factories especially after WWI • FEPC-less discrimination • Integrated military • Higher wages • Jim Crow not as obvious • Whites blame labor recruiters not themselves for driving away labor supply
Discrimination Southern Blacks Southern Whites • Only live and work in select areas • Lower wages then whites • Could not eat in certain restaurants • Could only go to segregated schools • Called hillbillies • Accent made fun of • Resented for getting jobs to keep out unions • Some northern whites refused to live with southern whites
