Combining the time-tested process of the 12 steps and ageless Biblical principles, the Recovery Alive Handbook moves the reader on a journey to freedom by way of a searching and fearless moral inventory, challenging &quotcore&quot questions and encouraging stories of personal transformation. This is a book chocked full of clear, directive, nuts and bolts solutions. This is a book that raises hope from the dead.&#8220This manual isn't just for someone suffering from addiction, but for people suffering from soul wounds like shame or abandonment which ultimately lead to other mental health disorders or addiction. Recovery Alive is a must read for people who are burned out on other secular methods of treating these soul wounds and ready for a new way.&#8221Sarah Coates, LCMHC, DCCFounder &amp President One-Eighty CounselingThe Recovery Alive Handbook openly invites you and I into a life changing relationship with our higher power, Jesus Christ and people who are on a similar journey. There comes a time when we all must look at the person in the mirror with honesty and humility. John used a quote by Spencer Johnson that speaks to all our lives. &#8220Change happens when the pain of holding on becomes greater than the fear of letting go.&#8221 We all experience pain and brokenness in our lives. John does such a great job of drawing us all in - whether we are actively working on recovery or whether we are unsure of why we ended up with the book or in a meeting - to deal with this pain, our fear of letting go, our hurts, and habits. John reminds us that recovery doesn&#8217t mean we have to be perfect but rather our lives are changed through actively surrendering the things we are powerless over, to the one who has the power. As a person who actively works through my own recovery journey, John widened my own look into the mirror. The use of personal stories and broader explanations of the steps enabled me to see the growing edges of my own life. The journey is worth it. You are worth it. God knows you are worth it. Donald R. Thompson Jr.Senior Pastor, Lakewood UMC of Jacksonville, FloridaFrom the introductionI don&#8217t know exactly why you&#8217re reading this. I do believe it must have something to do with a need for change. Maybe you have an addiction you can&#8217t kick. Maybe it started as something that you used to manage your life, but now it&#8217s managing you. Maybe you&#8217re just angry all the time, or anxious, or depressed. Maybe you&#8217ve been betrayed, rejected, abandoned, abused. Perhaps you are in the midst of a failing relationship. You&#8217d fix it if you knew how, or even just where to start. Or maybe you&#8217re watching someone you love self-destruct and you need some direction on how to help her change, or him change, or them change. Truth is, you are powerless to change them or you. If you could have, you would have. But you haven&#8217t, because you can&#8217t. You really can&#8217t. You are powerless, and your life is unmanageable. Let me validate that this is a terrifying reality to admit. However, without this admission, the 12 steps will be of no benefit. You can keep trying to change if you want, (we call this insanity) but it won&#8217t work because, did I tell you this already . . . You are powerless! At the same time, I am very excited to let you know that you can change. You really can! Confused? I get it. I was too when I started my recovery journey. I remember reading step 1 for the first time and thinking, &#8220Boy, that&#8217s depressing.&#8221 And it would be, if not for step 2 and 3 and all the others. But we&#8217ll get to that soon enough. Let&#8217s take this one step at a time, shall we?<br>
