CHAPTER 6 – “FOLLOWING HIS WAY” Take a moment and reflect on page 142, “Where are You?” Answer in your book the response that best reflects where you are right now.
How do the teachings of Jesus change our values and ideas about what is important? • Through prayer, • study of Church teachings and other moral laws, by • Reflecting on scripture and • Listening to advice from appropriate individuals we can discern what God is calling us to do and make moral choices.
Road signs like the Commandments lead us in the right direction. • When traveling on the road of life we want to make sure we take the right path…the path of righteousness. …and not be lured into the wrong direction.
God gave the Ten Commandments to Moses on Mt. Sinai. These ten commandments served as directions for living as God’s people.
The Ten Commandments were a part of the Mosaic Law. (See p. 145) These laws were given to Moses from God to guide the Israelites in the choices that they made. The first three commandments are concerned with the love of God. I am the Lord your God; you shall not have strange gods before me. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain. (Do not swear by God’s name) Remember to keep holy the Lord’s Day. (Worship God on Sunday)
The remainder of the commandments deal with love of neighbor. • Honor your father and your mother. • You shall not kill. • You shall not commit adultery. • You shall not steal. • You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor (lie). • You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife (want what belongs to someone else). • You shall not covet (want) your neighbor’s goods.
The Israelites showed their covenant ( p. 144) relationship with God by following the commandments and... …so does everyone who follows these same commandments today and tries to make good choices.

We can use human reason as it was given to us by God through natural law (p. 145) to make good choices. When we don’t, our lives can get very mixed up and messed up!
God’s law consists of: The Mosaic Law given to the Israelites, the Chosen People. • The law of the New Testament revealed by Jesus.
In both cases the Laws of God lead to happiness, righteousness and prosperity. The Promised Land, Canaan. God tells the Israelites they will survive adversity (difficulties) and become numerous and prosper if they obey and live by God’s commandments. They will live in the Promised Land, the land flowing with milk and honey.
In Matthew’s Gospel Jesus is presented as the “new lawgiver.”He fulfills the Old Law or the Mosaic Law and teaches his followers in the “Sermon on the Mount” to practice the words of God summed up in the Golden Rule, to “treat others as you want to be treated yourself.” The Sermon on the Mount. The New Law or • The summary of key teachings found in the Gospel according to Matthew including the Beatitudes and the New Law. • Law of the Gospel is summarized in Jesus’ New Commandment to “love one another as I have loved you.” (John 15:12)
Homework Assignment: Read through the Ten Commandments in the chart on page 145. Answer this question with each one: If a person chooses to go against this commandment, where does that path end up? Be specific with specific examples for each. Due: Tuesday, April 17.
