  1. Diffusion

  2. Solutions • A solution is made up of two parts, the solute and the solvent. • The solute (can be solid) dissolves in the solvent. • A concentrated solution has a lot of solute dissolved in the solvent. • A dilute solution has a small amount of solute dissolved in the solvent.

  3. Diffusion • Diffusion is the movement of particles from a high concentration to a lower concentration until they spread out evenly (look at first slide). • Osmosis is the passage of water molecules from a dilute solution into a more concentrated solution through a partially permeable membrane (some liquid can get through).

  4. Turgidity • When a cell increases the amount of water, it is said to be turgid. • When water is lost from the cell, it is said to have wilted (plant) or flaccid (animal).

  5. Questions • Complete Q 1 + 4 on Page 24 • EXTENSION: Write a short story on how to kill Teacher Mathew through osmosis • Your homework is to read and understand P16-18. If you have any problems – please ask!!!

  6. Potato Experiment • Complete Experiment 2.5 on Page 19. • You will need to include the length of each chip before and after osmosis. • The three questions (dot points) will need to be included in your book as full sentences. • Please be careful as there are sharp knives. Any silly business and we will do something VERY boring!!!
