Shift: Engaging Birmingham's Creative Community

Shift presents a platform for conversation, engagement, and idea-sharing in downtown Birmingham. The goal is to create an incubator space where creative communities can meet, discover common goals, and collaborate. The Shift program invites two hosts - a visual artist and a local creative - for five months to activate the space. The hosts will present a project to the public monthly and create zines documenting their ideas. This collaborative approach encourages hosts to explore new concepts, reflected in a set of five zines as evidence of the project. Shift aims to foster lasting connections and creative initiatives in Birmingham beyond its 5-month duration. The makerspace component includes a zine makerspace stocked with supplies for creating zines and houses the Birmingham Zine Library temporarily. (Word count: 113)

  1. CONCEPT Shift presents a platform for conversation, engagement and the sharing of ideas for the downtown community. Our goal is to create an incubator space where Birmingham’s disjointed creative communities can meet and discover common goals.

  2. PROGRAM Shift will invite 2 hosts, a visual artist and another local creative, for the course of 5 months, to occupy and activate the downtown space.  Hosts will work together to present a project to the public on the last Friday of each month as well as creating a zine to document their ideas. Shift’s collaborative nature will encourage hosts to work outside of their creative comfort zone, creating opportunities to consider new ideas and concepts that we hope will resound with the larger Birmingham community. The set of 5 zines will be the documentary evidence of the project. We hope the connections forged will lead to new creative initiatives whose impact lasts much longer than Shift’s 5 month run.

  3. MAKER SPACE SHIFT will also include a zine makerspace. The makerspace will be stocked with supplies for visitors to create their own zines as well as serving as the temporary home of the Birmingham Zine Library.
