The Original Intent of Charter Schools In 1988, education reformer Albert Shanker proposed the concept of a “charter school”— a school model which would allow teachers to experiment with innovative approaches and be empowered to draw on their expertise to create educational laboratories from which the traditional public schools would learn.https://www.aft.org/ae/winter2014-2015/kahlenberg_potter
With a Secondary Function. Code of Virginia § 22.1-212.5 (i) encourage the development of innovative programs; (ii) provide opportunities for innovative instruction and student assessment; (iii) provide parents and students more choices; (iv) provide innovative scheduling, structure, and management; (v) encourage performance-based educational programs; (vi) establish high standards for teachers and administrators; and (vii) develop models for replication in other public schools ACPS School Board Policy LC “The primary objective of charter schools within ACPS is to serve as “labs” to improve educational opportunities and enhance student achievement for all schools…. to inform the Division through the research, development, and implementation of programs that align with Division mission, vision, and goals.”
A 6-12 Lab for Student-Centered Learning Murray High School and Community Public Charter School (Community Middle) are co-located and aim to foster creativity and intellectual curiosity through art and design, experiential learning, mastery, and student agency. As lab schools, we also exist to design and pilot nontraditional approaches to learning that align to ACPS mission, vision, and goals with intent to inform practices more broadly.
Enrollment Growth Trend at Entry Points Update: Preliminary data suggest the incoming Murray 9th grade class will not only be the largest but may also be the most diverse matriculating cohort in school history at ~30% SOC.
What’s Next For Murray? Deepening our commitment to a strong liberal arts curriculum with an emphasis on creative arts, media, and design.

The Next Layer: International Baccalaureate (IB) This Spring, Murray was accepted as a candidate for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. This program aligns with the ACPS Contemporary High School Model, both with its philosophical approach to learning as well as adding to the portfolio of options for high school students. The IB elective offerings will align with the Creative Arts, Media, and Design pathways at Murray.

The IB Mission Statement The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end, the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

The Full IB Diploma ACADEMICS • One course from each of the six academic groups PLUS, THE IB CORE • Theory of Knowledge (ToK) • Extended Essay (EE) • Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS)
Theory of Knowledge (ToK) • Encourages students to think about what they think and why – as well as why others think the way they do • Involves analytical reflection about what is considered to be knowledge in areas of knowledge (what we know) and about ways of knowing (how we know) • Focuses on inquiry, discussion, and writing
Extended Essay (EE) The extended essay is an independent, self-directed piece of research, finishing with a 4,000-word paper. • practical preparation for undergraduate research • an opportunity for students to investigate a topic of special interest to them, which is also related to one of the student's six DP subjects. Through the research process for the extended essay, students develop skills in: • formulating an appropriate research question • engaging in a personal exploration of the topic • communicating ideas • developing an argument. Participation in this process develops the capacity to analyse, synthesize and evaluate knowledge.
Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) Aims to give students balance and wellness and get them involved in life outside the classroom. A total of 150 hours (50 each) that are: • Student-created • Real, purposeful activities, with significant outcomes • Personal challenging • Thoughtful consideration, such as planning, reviewing progress, reporting • Reflection on outcomes and personal learning
Post-Secondary Recognition Can take several forms • Enhanced admission potential • Honors or advanced standing, course selection privileges • Eligibility for scholarships, internships, special programs • Exemption from intro-level college courses / gen-ed requirements • Actual college course credit Depends on two things (for both AP and IB): • The scores earned on assessments • The credit-awarding policy of the individual college
Research on Post-Secondary Education Access When the results from this study are compared to national rates (as available) it is evident that diploma students, both earners and non-earners, enroll, persist, and graduate on time at notably higher rates. Diploma earners have generally slightly higher rates than non-earners. • Immediate enrollment for all diploma students was 78% compared to the national average of 69% • 2-year retention for all diploma students was 96% compared to the national rate of 77% • 2-year retention rates for diploma earners was 96% compared to the non-earners rate of 95% • 6-year graduation rates for all diploma students was 83% compared to the national rate of 56% • 6-year graduation rates for diploma earners was 87% compared to the non-earners rate of 72% Source
