Britain Dominated India • The Mughal Dynasty collasped • Since 1757, the East India Company led the power in India • The company’s army occupied by sepoys, the Indian soldiers • To retain their power • India had plenty of natural resources • Jewel in the crown; most valuable colony • Britain traded with other countries • Improved both Brit. & Ind. economy
India • World’s third largest railroad network was established in India • Brought modernization • Improvement of public health and sanitation • Schools were built and education was more provided • Ended local conflicts
India • Too much political/economical power given to Britain • Britain restricted rules for Indian manufacturers • Caused famine and decreased food production • Racism grew • Indians thought Britain would force Christianity • Sepoys rebelled: Sepoy Rebellion (details next slide)
The Sepoy Munity • Economy declines • Rumors spread; beef and pork fats covered the cartridges for Sepoy’s new Enfield rifles • angered both Hindus and Muslims • More infuriated by Britain’s reaction • Britain took power again after brutal battles • BUT India couldn’t unite • Hindus didn’t want revival of the Mughal Dynasty; rather preferred Britain • Muslims wanted Mughal Dynasty back
Changes in India • 1858, Britain directly controlled India after disputes over Hindus and Muslims • Racism against Indians intensified • Conflicts between Brit. & Ind. grew • Ram Mohun Roy, an Indian, throw away India’s religious traditions • Child marriages, caste system… • Nationalists established two parties: the Indian National Congress & the Muslim League
Overall • Fall of Mughal Dynasty • Britain influenced modernization and westernization on India • India got rid of prejudiced old traditions • Two national groups: the Indian National Congress & the Muslim League
