  2. WHAT IS BEAUTY ANYWAY?

  3. Activity: Beauty is…… • The dictionary states that the word Beauty is a quality of a person, object, place, or idea that provides a perceptual experience of pleasure, affirmation, meaning, or goodness.

  4. Beauty is Health! • Beauty is more than physical appearance • True beauty comes from within (Inner beauty)

  5. Many women do not exercise to be healthy. • Many men lift weights, not to improve their bone health, but to achieve the chiselled muscular frame.

  8. Body image is: • Activity: what is body image? • 1: How u perceive your body • 2: How you feel about yourself

  9. A healthy body image is being comfortable in your own skin, being happy with the way you look and feeling good within yourself.

  10. An unhealthy body image is thinking your body is bigger or smaller that it is in reality, believing that you aren't perfect on the outside, and thinking that how you look on the outside is your entirety. You are more than just your skin!

  11. Factors that contribute to body image: • Activity: who can name these? • Family (positive experiences or negative experiences) • Children’s toys and fairy tales • Friends • The media

  12. The Truth About Guys • A lot of guys spend plenty of time in front of the mirror. It's a fact — some guys care just as much as girls do about their appearance. • Men also worry about their body image • Men are under increasing pressure to have an ideal body:

  13. more men these days are on some sort of diet. • An increasing number of men are undergoing cosmetic surgery. • More men are buying cosmetic/grooming products.

What are Mental Health Difficulties? • People who have mental health difficulties have problems controlling their thoughts/ thinking and often find it hard to function and do things healthy people could easily do. They can be obsessive (overly concerned or worried about things healthy people wouldn’t normally let bother them).

  28. What is self –talk? • ‘Mind chatter’ • The inner critic • …is a voice or a self speaking inside of our mind to us. • How to recognise the inner critic: • Stop and listen • Activity: Self talk

  29. Possible Causes: • The air we breath • Food additives • Chemicals • Trauma to the head • Family history of Mental Health illness etc… • A stressful event or situation • Being teased or bullied for a long period of time

When body worries go too far :body- related Mental Health Disorders / conditions: • Anorexia Nervosa: • is an eating disorder in which people with anorexia believe that they are either extremely overweight or have a bad self image and very low self esteem.  This causes them to stop eating in fear of gaining weight.

  31. Bulimia- Nervosa: • Is another eating disorder. However people with bulimia eat. They often eat large amounts of food and force themselves to throw up soon after because they feel guilty and fear putting on weight.

These Eating Disorders can affect a person’s health in a dangerous way. • People can become/have: • malnourished, • Pale • Premature aging of the skin • Dizzy • Tired • Have memory loss • An electrolyte imbalance • Passing out (especially in public places which is really embarrassing, and extremely dangerous • Have bad breath (from vomiting)

  33. Women and men who diet frequently are more likely to: • • Binge eat • • Purge food (vomit) • • Have poor health • • Become depressed

  34. Body Dysmorphic Disorder: • Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is a Mental Health Condition in which people are preoccupied /overly concerned with a ‘real’ or ‘imagined’ imperfection/fault in their physical appearance.

  35. What can someone do to get help? • The first step is recognising and admitting that there is a problem. • The second step is asking for help.

  36. What sort of help is available? • Doctor (GP) • Counsellors • Psychiatrists • Psychologists • Cognitive behavioural therapy • Medications • Alternative therapies(very helpful)

  37. 1 in 4 people will experience symptoms of mental health difficulties at some stage in their life time • It’s important to remember that if you get help early, your chances for a full recovery are high leading to a normal healthy life again. • Treatment in Australia and the western world is world class and very successful
