Malaria Programs: Best Practices The programs we support
ELCA Malaria CampaignCumulative statistics • 9,227 church leaders, program staff, health workers, community leaders and volunteers trained in malaria prevention and control • 1,912,445 people reached through malaria programming • 8,108 workshop or education sessions held • 22,056 nets distributed • 60,788 education pamphlets distributed • 100,304 people tested for malaria • 19,179 people treated for malaria • 32,179 pregnant women received pre-natal malaria care • 4,429 people participated in community-based savings and self-help groups • $107,311 in US $ mobilized in these groups
Education (in 2013) • In Malawi, malaria awareness activities reached 25,000 people • In Uganda, 41,000 people learned about malaria prevention and control • In Tanzania, 14,000 people were sensitized about malaria prevention and control • In Zimbabwe, 43,000 people were reached

Prevention • Long-lasting insecticide treated nets distributed in 2013: 1,888 in Malawi 2,738 in Nigeria 2,950 in Zambia 9,366 in Uganda 2,950 in Zambia In Zimbabwe, 84% of households had indoor residual insecticide spraying
Diagnosis and Treatment (in 2013) • In Uganda, more than 42,000 people were tested for malaria; 16,000 tested positive and received medication • In Malawi, 55,660 test kits and 186,000 packets of malaria medication were delivered to clinics • Because of prompt treatment, MartinhoLutero Clinic in Munene, Mozambique reported no deaths from malaria in children under five!
Sustainable Livelihoods • In Malawi alone, VSLA’s have mobilized more than $88,000 USD to help communities and households become financially stable. • In Zimbabwe, 40 new VSLA’s with 181 memebrs have been established and saved $18,668
