Educator Effectiveness:Making Connections & Rubric Analysis Presented by the Oregon Department of Education August 2013
Activity 1: Tallying the Initiatives • What is the work you are doing? • Brainstorm initiatives in your district • Share out
Today’sOutcomes • Develop understanding of the integration of Educator Effectiveness (EE), Common Core State Standards (CCSS), and School Improvement (SI) • Connecting standards for teachers and standards for students through a review of district EE rubrics
Activity 2: Article Review Jigsaw “Integrating the Common Core into Educator Effectiveness Work” • Read your assigned section • Share key points from each section in your table groups • Tables share out a major take-away http://insighteducationgroup.drotzdesign.com/pdf/CCSS_TE_Integration_DRAFT_Feb12.pdf
Integrating EE, CCSS, and SI: Commitments from ODE • Coordinate timelines at the state level and integrate them into a cohesive work plan • Coordinate messages from the state so you are hearing the same thing • Provide samples of documents/tools related to each of the initiatives • Provide integrated support identified by districts
Integrating EE, CCSS, and SI: Recommendations for Districts • School/District Leadership teams review Action Plans and Implementation Plans simultaneously • Identify overlaps in personnel, time, resources, activities, and outcomes • Collaborate to find efficiencies in these areas • Coordinate/revise implementation plans
Activity #3: Reflection Questions for Discussion • What are you already doing in your district integrating CCSS, EE and SI? • What “A-HAs!” or opportunities come to mind based on the discussion so far? • What recommendations do you have for us?
Activity #4: Cross-District Sharing • Make eye contact with someone from another district • One minute each to share what your district is doing or an “A-HAs” • Take a break!
Educator Effectiveness and Common Core both… • Describe knowledge, skills, and practices needed to meet standards • Provide guidance on instructional strategies and techniques • Inform job-embedded, ongoing professional development
Implementing an Evaluation System: Why is it important? • To improve educator practice to support student achievement • CCSS focus on what students should know and be able to do • EE standards for practice (rubric) describe what educators should know and be able to do
Activity #5: Comparing Rubrics • Compare your district rubric and the CCSS standards and highlight the similarities • Write down examples that will answer the following question: “If I am implementing CCSS correctly, what will I be doing on the rubric?”
Reflection Questions for Discussion • As you implement the Common Core, what teaching strategies do you see as being essential to successful implementation? • What is the interrelationship between CCSS and EE?
Final Thoughts • What are some big ideas you can take back to your district? • Session Evaluation
