Our First Experiment!! Psyc 301 -- Week 5
Today’s Outline • Return Observational Study Method and Results Sections • Address Papers • Experiment • Survey Results • Survey Methods and Results
Methods and Results:Overall • Average score: 12.6 (sd= 2.1) • People either did very well, or not so good • <12, think about coming to see me after class, or sometime during the week
Methods and Results: Common Mistakes • Participants section: • ONLY TALK ABOUT THE PARTICIPANTS • Where these participants? • Include # of men and women • Where did you sample from? • Randomized or not? • Procedure: • Construct and Operational definitions • Locations, names, and confidentiality
Results Section: • Some guidance in structure: • First = What were we looking for or studying? (hypothesis, purpose of our study) • Second = What test/statistical analysis did we run to test our hypothesis or analyze what we were interested in? • Frequencies, T-Test, Pearson Correlation, etc • Third = What did the test reveal (in statistical terms) • I.e., A significant difference with the test statistic in APA format and a p-value • Lastly and Most IMPORTANTLY!! • Interpret the statistic, wrap it up • When given the chance to hold a door open, women (6) were more likely to exhibit courtesy than men (2). • Part time employees (M = 5, SD = .5) are more satisfied with their jobs than full time employees (M = 2, SD = .5).
Experiment • Take out a sheet of paper and number it 1 - 45 • Instructions will be handed out • Please read the instructions for your group • When you are done we will begin the study
The Words • I will be reading through a list of words. • Follow the instructions for your group
Math Class is Tough… • Complete the following long-division problems: 3,204 / 18 = ? 10,252 / 44 = ? 193,243 / 91 = ?
Response Sheets • I will pass out a response sheet numbered from 1-45 • Instructions: • Write down the words you remember in any order • You will have 5 minutes
For your 5 points… • Turn your response sheet in to me • Make sure it includes: • YOUR NAME • GROUP # • I will make the experimental and statistical magic happen
Post-experimentation: What did we just do? • What do you think this study was about? • Did you recognize any variables? • Dependent? • Independent? • Can anyone generate any potential hypotheses?
Survey Results • N = 18 (15 F, 3 M) • Satisfaction With Life (SWL) Descriptives • Min : 12.00 • Mean : 27.00 • Max : 35.00 • Standard Dev : 6.70 • Perceived Stress (PSQ) Descriptives • Min : 2.00 • Mean : 14.39 • Max : 31.00 • Standard Dev : 8.64
Analysis • Pearson Correlation • R(16) = -0.799 • p < .001, Statistically Significant • What does this tell us about the relationship between life satisfaction and perceived stress? • Direction? • Magnitude?
Survey Participants • Who were participants? • How many participants? • Men, Women • Where were they from? • Anything else?
Materials • What surveys did we use? • What did they assess? • How many questions did they have? • How were questions answered? • Was there a time limit? • Anything else?
Procedure • How did we collect our data, step by step • First = ? • Second = ? and so on . . .
Results • What was the purpose of our study? • Hypotheses we came up with before taking the surveys? • What statistical analysis did we use? • What did our analysis reveal statistically? • What does this statistic mean? • Can we graphically represent it?
Due next class • Make sure you have turned in your Experiment response sheet • Write up a Method and Results section for the Survey data we collected • Staple a grading sheet (from class website) to the write up • Don’t forget the grading sheet!
