Space Engineering Post-16 Course Pioneering Course • A-level in Mathematics – led by Loughborough College • A-level in Physics – led by National Space Centre • BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Engineering – led by Loughborough College • 12 students started September 2012
Why is this course different? • Relevant work experience in space industry • Regular masterclasses from space scientists and engineers • One day a week at the National Space Centre
Progression Routes • Higher Education • The following are a selection of UK Universities who will accept these qualifications for entry onto physics/mathematics/engineering courses • University of Oxford • University of Cambridge • Cambridge Engineering – direct correspondence with Dr Geoff Parks (Dean of Admissions) • Imperial College London • Aerospace engineering – direct correspondence with Dr Matthew Santer (Admissions tutor) • University of Leicester • University of Nottingham • University of Warwick • Warwick Physics – direct correspondence with Dr Tony Arber (Admissions tutor for physics) • Employment • Opportunities to start work immediately after finishing the course are also available
Higher Apprenticeship • Government announcement • £25m funding • Over 4,000 placements • Variety of sectors: airline pilots, lawyers, accountants • Space Engineering • National Space Academy and Loughborough College • Create curriculum framework
Current Status • In consultation with industry • Applied skills and employability skills • Must be useful for industry • Foundation degree • Creating employment
What’s next • September 2013! • ~ 55 students • Good A-level qualifications • 19-24 year olds • Location • To be confirmed – ISIC Framework • Harwell, Leicester and Surrey
