Depth of Field (DOF) Photography
Composition • One of the most important components of photography is composition. • Compositionis the placement or arrangement of visual elements in a work of art. • Identifying and learning how to control composition is key to developing an amazing portfolio. • One of the basic elements of composition is “Depth of Field”
Depth of Field • A camera can only focus its lens at a single point. • DOF refers to how much of the picture is in focus. • We can manipulate camera settings to control what is in focus.
Shallow Dof Shallow DOF means that a small portion of the picture is in focus.
Extended DeoExtended DOF means that the whole picture is in focus.
Personal Preference • DOF is a matter of personal preference, it is commonly used to enhance an effect in a photographor draw attention to a specific part of the photograph. • Shallow DOF • Extended DOF
What affects DOF? • Camera-to-subject distance • The greater the shooting distance, the deeper the DOF • Lens focal length (Zoom) • The shorter length (zoomed out), the deeper the DOF • Image/Format size • Diaphragm opening (Aperture) • Small f-stop (large aperture) = shallow DOF • The aperture basically works the same way your pupils do, the more dilated it is, the more background is blurred. • ISO Setting • High ISO = Extended DOF • Low ISO = Shallow DOF
Control ling f-stop! What happens as the f-stop increases?
For a Shallow Depth Of Field • Decrease f-stop (Lens opening will be big) • Decrease distance from subject • Decrease ISO setting • Increase focal length (zoom in)
For a Deep Depth of Field • Increase f-stop (Lens opening will be small) • Increase distance from subject • Increase ISO setting • Decrease focal length (zoom out)
