  2. Our Three Questions: • #1 Theologically Hard: “How Can a Loving God Allow Evil?” • #2 Practically Hard: “How Do I Love the Unlovable?” • #3 Awkward: “How Do I Live with Christian Ethics in a Secular World?”

  3. Getting Into It: • Who do you spend time with in a week? • How many of those people share the same values and ethics as you do? • How many people support your faith, tolerate your faith, or reject your faith? • How many hours a week do you spend in each of these types of relationships? • How do the numbers change when you add in time listening to the radio, music, internet, facebook, TV, movies… • How is your life different than the other “good people” who do not follow Jesus?

  4. Nothing New Under The Sun!

  5. 1 Peter 2:11-12 on page 1888. • Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul. 12 Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.

  6. John 15:18-19 on page 1677. • “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. 19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.

  7. Tolerance Instead of Truth!

Ephesians 2:1-5 on page 1818 • As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. 3 All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath. 4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions— it is by grace you have been saved.

  9. 1 Peter 1:14-16 on page 1887 • 14 As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. 15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”

  10. Speaking in Absolutes • Absolutes including • One God, • The Bible as God’s word and complete truth, • Judgement based on God’s word, • The necessity of salvation, and • Specific ethics related to speech and sexuality.

  11. These changes can creep into the church and stain the bride of Christ.

Ephesians 5:3-4 on page 1822 • But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people. 4 Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.

  13. Consider Leviticus 18

  14. Sexual Sins • Incest, rape, adultery, premarital sex (common law), bestiality, masturbation, polygamy, sodomy, homosexuality, lust, prostitution, fornication, pornography, and divorce which I have also included as a cultural change that God does not approve of.

  15. 1 Corinthians 6:18-20 on page 1777 • Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body. 19 Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price.Therefore honor God with your body.

  16. Colossians 3:5-7 on page 1834. • Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. 7You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived.

  18. Colossians 4:5-6 on page 1835 • Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. 6Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.

  20. Final Thought • We are in the process of being changed so we consider • Who we are influencing, • How we influence others, and • What influences we need to be aware of?
