  2. Struggles • Students are intimidated • You don’t consider yourself a “math person” • Knowledge builds • MUST BE TAUGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Help!!!!!!!!!!!!! • Where can I get help? • Other Teachers • Other Coaches • Former Players/High School Students • KAAC Summer Camp • Internet • Apps • How can I get them to help? • Ask them to write down how to do a specific problem • Ask them to write more questions just like this one • Send students

  4. Practice • Practice Math every day!!!!! • Everyone can do math • Write down the problem • Write down the Units • Memorize common knowledge • Glossaries • Formulas • Frequently asked questions

  5. Practice (cont.) • Write questions (especially students) • Make notes in an Academic Team notebook

  6. Coaching Strategies How do I increase my team’s speed? • Get a book on speed calculations • All tossups are math • Memorize common knowledge • Must check and see if students learned the information • Must check and see if students retained the information

  7. Coaching Strategies (cont.) How do I increase the accuracy of my teams calculations? • All bonuses are math • Quizzes/Practice Worksheets • No time limit (very risky) • Go over missed questions

  8. Coaching Strategies (cont.) Quick Recall questions are normally written to be done quickly • Numbers are chosen to simplify calculations • Specific cases are only used if easily recognizable • If a problem seems to take too long to calculate, then there is probably a “trick.”

  9. Where can I get questions? • KAAC Subject Area Packets • Definitions from textbook glossaries • Students (best way to practice) • Other teachers • Write down misses from season and compile a list

  10. Written Assessment • Tricks may not work • All variations of a problem must be taught • Requires more in-depth knowledge • More memorization creates more time for calculations • Graphing calculators for middle/high school • Must be taught to use
