  1. Talk with your team and be prepared to share your answer with the class. Do Now What do you think of when you think of polar bears? You probably imagine them in a snow-covered setting. Why don’t polar bears live in the desert?

  2. Biome –a large area characterized by its climate and the plants and animals that live in the area.

  3. Biomes and Ecosytems are NOT the same! Biomes Only refers to a VERY LARGE AREA Ecosystems Can refer to a small area to a very large area However, BOTH biomes and ecosystems have biotic and abiotic factors!

  4. Land Biomes 1. Temperate Deciduous Forest 2. Coniferous Forest 3. Tropical Rain Forests 4. Temperate Grassland Savannas Deserts Tundra

  5. Forest Biomes-found in areas that have mild temperature and plenty of rain Three types of Forest Biome Deciduous forest Coniferous forest Tropical Rainforest

  6. Temperate Deciduous Forests Animals that live in Temperate Deciduous Forests are bears, snakes, woodpeckers. Climate Average Yearly Rainfall 29.5 to 49 inches Average Temperature: Summer: 82 F Winter: 43F Deciduous means “to fall off” Leaves change color, leaves fall off Deciduous trees shed their leaves to save water during the winter or during the dry season.

  7. Coniferous Forests Conifers produce seeds in cones. They have special leaves that are shaped like needles. The leaves have a thick, waxy coating. Evergreen trees – trees that stay green all year long and do not lose all of their leaves Average Yearly Rainfall: 14 to 29.5 inches Average Temperature: Summer: 57 F Winter 14 F Animals that live in Coniferous Forests are: squirrels, insects, deer, moose, porcupines

  8. Animals that live in Tropical Rain Forests are birds (over 1,400 species ), butterflies, monkeys Tropical Rain Forests Climate Average Yearly Rainfall Up to 157.5 inches Average Temperature: Summer: 93 F Winter: 68F Have more kinds of plants and animals than any other land biome. Some animals live on the ground but most live in the canopy or treetops. Soil is thin and poor so roots of trees are above-ground and vines grow up the tree trunks to reach the light.

  9. Temperate Grasslands Include grasses and other flowering plants, have few trees Fires, drought, and grazing prevent the growth of trees and shrubs. Climate Average Yearly Rainfall 10 to 29.5 inches Average Temperature: Summer: 86 F Winter: 32F Animals that live in Temperature Grasslands are: prairie dogs, mice, bison

  10. Savannas A grassland that has scattered clumps of trees and seasonal rain Found in Africa, India, and South America Climate Average Yearly Rainfall 59 inches Average Temperature: Dry Season: 93 F Wet Season: 61F Animals that live in Savannas are: Zebras, elephants, giraffes and wildebeests.

  11. Deserts A biome that is very dry and very hot. Plants and animals have special adaptations to live in the dry, hot climate. Climate Average Yearly Rainfall LESS than 10 inches Average Temperature: Summer: 100 F Winter: 45F Animals that live in Deserts are: Snakes, spadefoot toad, desert tortoises

  12. Tundra Biome that is a treeless plain with very cold temperatures and little rainfall Found in the Arctic, Antarctic, or on the tops of mountains Two types: POLAR TUNDRA and ALPINE TUNDRA Average Yearly Rainfall: 12 to 20 inches Average Temperature: Summer: 54 F Winter -15 F Animals that live in Tundra are: caribou, insects, birds, musk, oxen, wolves

  13. Do Now What is a biome? Name the 7 land biomes.

  14. Land Biome Project • Create a flip chart including the following information: • Name on the label • Describe the biome • Describe the climate • Name the abiotic and biotic factors in the biome • Draw a picture representing your biome

  15. Land Biomes Group Assignments 1. Temperate Deciduous Forest (Christian, 2. Coniferous Forest (Gerardo, 3. Tropical Rain Forests (Bryant 4. Temperate Grassland (Christopher Savannas (Christopher Deserts (Ron Tundra (Frank
