The Goal To explore the challenges of constructing a language policy that seeks to support learning in what may be two new, unfamiliar languages – Putonghua and English – without compromising students’ ability to function in the dominant language of the host community; for many, the language of their culture.

Fundamental Questions • What is a language policy? A language policy is an action statement … It is concerned less with where the students are going , and more with how they are going to get there. Language Policy in Schools, Corson (1999)
Fundamental Questions • Why do schools need a language policy? “Teaching and learning are predominantly linguistics phenomena; that is we accomplish most of our learning through the vehicle of language… Therefore, language is a tool that teachers can use to enhance cognitive development.” Costa, Marzano 2011

Underlying Beliefs The ISF Academy recognizes that learners within the school community come from diverse language and cultural backgrounds and have the potential to develop proficiency in communication and literacy in two or more languages which may or may not include their „mother tongue‟.
The ISF Academy further recognizes the need to provide programs of study that ensure the sustained development of language and literacy for all students including „mother tongue‟ maintenance. The ISF Academy believes that communication in a variety of contexts, using varied modes of expression, in more than one language is a necessity for the intercultural awareness expected of global citizens in the 21st century.
