Alexis Newton discussed the research she is conducting with her colleague, Hope Szypulski, entitled;  Saddles, Spurs and Dark Horse Cowboys:  An Ethnographic Exploration of Injury Prevention Among Working Cowboys.  Dr. Newton and Dr. Szypulski have been interviewing working cowboys (cowgirls) since the spring and will continue until they have saturation of themes.  They believe that this study will identify a culture within our culture and their health beliefs regarding injury prevention. The working cowboy is perceived as being stoic.  When seen in emergency rooms for injuries they are often met with lectures on "why they did not wear a helmet, vest, etc.".  Drs. Newton and Szypulski believe that this has furthered cowboys/cowgirls reluctance to seek care when injured.
