  10. Term of Office • Originally, no limit on time served. • 22nd Amendment (1951) • Two four-year terms, if elected and the reelected OR • 10 years total, if take over as vice president during last 2 years of previous president’s term, then elected and reelected

  11. Salary & Compensation • In 2000, Congress raised the salary for the President to $400,000 per year. • He gets $50,000 annually for expenses. • Other compensation: See p. 358.

  12. Does the President Pay for ANYTHING? • Must pay for groceries (although private chef prepares food), drinks, dry-cleaning, toothpaste and other health and beauty products.

  13. Does the President Pay Taxes? • The President pays income tax on his salary. • The President does NOT have to pay taxes on perks like plane, free tickets to shows, private screenings of newly released movies, etc.
