  2. 20,000 When Texas Tech first opened, the majority of funds went towards the buildings. President Knapp (in 1937) decided to dedicate one day every spring to make the campus beautiful. This is now an annual tradition today where students and teachers come together to make the campus beautiful.

  4. Bangin’ Bertha The Saddle Tramps carry Bangin’ Bertha on a trailer. Bertha was designed by Saddle Tramp Joe Winegar in 1959 and was donated by the Santa Fe Railroad. Bangin’ Bertha is now considered a spirit – raiser and a big tradition at Texas Tech

  6. Blarney Stone The Blarney Stone was unveiled on St. Patrick’s Day in 1939. Test confirmed that this stone was a piece of the original Blarney Stone. The stone is located on a stand in front of the old Electrical Engineering Building. It is said that seniors that kiss the stone upon graduation will receive the gift of eloquent speech.

Carol of Lights, the Fourth of July at 1:00PM, in conjunction with the ceremonial ringing of the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, and Summer Sunday evening concerts are another of the Tech traditions. A carillon is a musical instrument that has 23 bells that are arranged in chromatic sequence. It is located in the west tower of the administration building.

  28. After the win over TCU the bells rang through out the night and kept Lubbock residents up all night. The Saddle Tramps ring the bells after Teas Tech victories and during special occasions. The Victory Bells hang in the east tower of the Administration Building.

  30. According to legend, the plan was to face Will Rogers so that he could be riding off into the sunset. This didn’t work out because Soapsuds’ rear was facing downtown. To solve this problem, the horse and Will was turned 23 degrees to the east so that the horses rear was facing the direction of Texas A&M.
