State President’s Message Lighting Up Lives Awards Four times during the year, we will recognize chapters chosen by the State Board for doing a GREAT job with projects, fundraising, membership drives, inputting information into CHARITY and CARES, and exemplifying what it means to be “A Citizen Wherever We Serve.” Nominations come from local management, state board members, and information submitted for the monthly Energizer. Chosen by the State Board for the first quarter and receiving $500 each are: Ashley Koby We are off to a very impressive start to 2012. Several of the members of the state board have had the opportunity to get out and visit chapters across the state. It’s impressive to see the amount of effort and focus that’s going into developing plans and events for 2012. I’ve attended several membership drives and it’s nice to see the energy level and new people bringing new ideas to the organization. I’d encourage you to continue putting plans together for the year and getting those plans on our member’s and management’s calendars. The more advanced planning we are able to do, the better participation seems to be. I’m very excited about our “Lighting Up Lives” awards. We had some great nominations and as you can see several chapters have already had some large events and are touching lives across the state. I think the way we are doing these awards this year will get chapters more recognition and also inform management more on what we are doing. Congratulations to the winners for the first quarter. If you have any issues, concerns, or questions, please don’t hesitate to call myself, your local chapter officer, or the state office. We are here to help. Valentine’s Day Projects for Augusta Dates • Tifton’s Cruisin’ for a Cure Motorcycle Ride is April 14 • Valdosta’s 2nd annual tennis tournament is April 21 • Northwest Mountain’s Clay Shoot to benefit Susan G. Komen 3 Day is April 21 • Plant Branch Charity Golf Tournament is April 23. • Columbus Fishing Tournament is April 28. • 4th Annual East Georgia Golf Classic sponsored by Augusta, Thomson, Waynesboro and Plant Vogtle is April 30. • Forest Park’s 10th Annual Charity Golf Tournament is May 4. • Metro South Fishing Tournament is May 5. • Metro South & Forestry and Right-of-Way 4th Annual Georgia Power Clays to benefit Electric Kids is Friday, • May 11. • Heart of Georgia Golf Tournament is May 18. • Metro South’s Golf Tournament is June 8. • Past State Presidents’ Luncheon is July 27. • North Fulton’s 2nd Annual Kylan Warren Golf Tournament is August 27. • Gwinnett’s Mary Ann Manley Electric Kids Golf tournament is October 3. • Annual Meeting is November 10 in Macon. Augusta Chapter members held a bake sale to raise money for the Relay For Life team. The sale was able to make $479. Linda Goble with resident of the Golden Living Center Members also delivered homemade goody bags to residents at a local assisted living facility. National Volunteer Week April 15-21, 2012 Twenty-one members of Metro Atlanta chapters worked the telephones on Sunday evening, March 4, 4:30 – 10:00 p.m. for GPB’s membership drive. State President Ashley Koby was interviewed on the air about Citizens of Georgia Power. The group received great publicity and much thanks for their support of GPB. Tosha Morell, Metro South President, chaired the event. Thank you for all you do to make volunteering a success and bringing truth to the statement “A Citizen Wherever We Serve”.

  3. Did you know that the Women of Georgia Power set a Guinness World Record? Above – Past State Presidents Margaret Logan, Roberta Bearss, and Mary Ann Beckham The Quarter Challenge was by far the most unusual fund-raising event ever tackled by Women of Georgia Power. Chapters in the state participated in raising $15,600 for the Kidney Foundation. March 16, 1985 over 100 volunteers gathered in Central City Park in Atlanta to lay 688,000 quarters in a line over 10 miles long to set a new Guinness World Record. A vacuum was used to collect the coins through a 100’ hose to an armored vehicle. Later in Aug., the Women of Georgia Power received the National Kidney Foundation’s Public Relations Award. Margaret Logan was State President at this time. Plant Yates Raising Funds for March of Dimes Team Hot Dog Luncheon On February 15 Pinto Bean Luncheon On February 22 The Plant Yates Chapter held a Hot Dog Luncheon on Feb. 15. The event was a great success and raised $240 for the team! The Plant Yates Chapter held a Pinto Bean Luncheon on Feb. 22 to raise funds for their March of Dimes team. Members baked and donated delicious cakes for dessert. The event raised $320 Ken Yearta cooks cornbread Charlie Brown and Barry Long

Metro South Participates in Celebrity Read Program in honor Of Dr. Seuss Week Rome’s Burwell Creek Project The NW Green Team, along with the NW Citizen’s of Georgia Power members, had a VERY successful day on Wednesday, March 7, with the 5 Star Grant to restore the banks of the Burwell Creek in Rome.  This effort, in coordination with “Keep Rome-Floyd Beautiful”, is a Work-In-Progress Project, approved by the Federal Government, and supported by Southern Company. The entire project is focused on sustaining and re-creating the banks of Rome’s Burwell Creek, just before it enters into the Oostanaula River.  Special thanks to the 11 NW Region employees that volunteered their time (Haley McConkey, Vickie Adcock, Brandi Montgomery, Tim Turner, Viola Ibarra, Sherri Hooper, Beth Head, April Hale, Carrly Lovvorn, Ginger Whitfield and Jeff Gilbert). Deanne Elliott and Tosha Morell participated in the Celebrity Read program in honor of Dr. Seuss Week at elementary schools on March 3. Deanne read to students in Clayton County at Anderson Elementary School, and Tosha read to students from Clayton County at Rivers Edge Elementary School. Tosha and Deanne represented Georgia Power and Metro South Citizens very well to our youth and community. Tosha Morell with Thing 2 Deanne Elliott Relay For Life Events Are Coming Up – Join Your Local Team on this Great State Project Relay For Life is a life-changing event that helps communities across the globe celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. • Overnight relay-style event • Teams of people camp out around a track • Members of each team take turns walking around the track for the duration of the event • Food, games and activities provide entertainment and fundraising opportunities • Family-friendly environment • Because it’s a Relay, you’re not required to be there the entire time…but it’s so much fun, you’ll probably find it hard to leave! Contact your local chapter to learn more about an event in your area.

  5. Dublin Chapter’s Valentine Project Columbus Supports Girls, Inc. Over 20 members of Columbus’s Chapter of the Citizen’s and the Columbus Ambassadors partnered to prepare a spaghetti dinner for the Girls, Inc. annual Mother Daughter Sweetheart Ball on February 13.  The Citizens and Ambassadors prepared and served hundreds of kids, families and friends tasty homemade spaghetti, salad and garlic bread.  This is a great event that provides a forum for the girls to display their many talents through participation  in a beauty pageant and talent show.  The Columbus chapter and Ambassadors have been a part of this event for nearly 30 years and it seems to get better and better every year.  Special thanks to Terry Ellis, Velma Bright and Sabra Zautke for their efforts heading this event. The Dublin Chapter prepared Valentine’s Day gift bags for the staff members and patients at the Lighthouse Adult Daycare. Twelve members took a little time out of their day to deliver the gift bags and “light up” lives. General Office Cooks and Serves Dinner for Hope Lodge Residents Metro South Membership Drives • The Metro South Chapter is into the full swing of their • annual membership appreciation and drive. Their • ambitious schedule to take the event to all employees in the • region has the following planned: • March 6 – pancake breakfast at Noah’s Ark Operating • March 8 – hot dog lunch at Old National office • March 13 – pancake breakfast at Oakley Operating • March 15 – pancake breakfast at Newnan Operating • March 22 – hot dog lunch at Smith Street office Members of the General Office Chapter cooked and served dinner to forty cancer patients and their caregivers February 16. Hope Lodge provides housing for cancer patients while receiving treatment. A caregiver is also allowed to stay with the patient. The facility offers many of the comforts of home, but the true magic of the Hope Lodge is the inviting atmosphere. Other guests, facing similar circumstances, rally around each other, offering strength and support. The volunteers and staff, many of whom are cancer survivors, strive to create an environment where guests can relax and concentrate on getting well. The patients and caregivers really enjoy the dinners provided by different groups. Both General Office and H L Thomas Chapters provide four to five meals each year. Forest Park Chapter Holds “Varsity” Membership Luncheon Jefferson Street and General Office Partner For Atlanta Community Food Bank’s March 11 Hunger Walk A Varsity lunch was served to employees at Forest Park on February 23 as part of their membership drive. There were twenty-three members of General Office and Jefferson Street Chapters who joined to form a team for the Annual Hunger Walk to benefit Community Food Bank. The team raised $1820! There was a table set up for renewing and new members. The chapter has 150 members at present. Jefferson Street Chapter representatives (left to right) Chuck Jackson, Lauren Rosenberg, Louisa Rosenberg, Harrison Rosenberg, and Billie Jo Driggers. Forest Park Chapter Continues Their Weekly Deliveries of Food to Shelters Plant Yates Donates Items To Newnan’s Community Welcome Home Plant Yates Chapter decided to use $200 of the money earned on their Valentine Basket Fundraiser to purchase Much needed items to the Community Welcome Home in Newnan. The items were delivered on March 7. Shown above with the weekly produce deliveries for the shelters are Aristotle Savage, and chapter co-presidents Terry Bloodworth and Brion Leshok. The group donates 600-900 lbs per week.
