Unit 13
Lead-in 1. Do you prefer to read short stories or novels? Why? A: I prefer to read short stories rather than novels, because it takes a short time to finish the whole story and I can get joy and excitement easily.
B: I can’t agree. I think novels have more complicated plots and more characters. From the novels, you can learn about more current social situations and more culture. C: In my opinion, both of them have their own features. I like both short stories and novels.
2. What stories do you like best, fairy tales, scientific fictions, thrilling stories or detective stories? A: I like fairy tales best, because they can bring us a great deal of splendid imagination. They are usually full of magic images. They are like colorful dreams.
B: I like scientific fictions best, because they can bring us a great deal of splendid imagination. We can learn what our world would be like in the future. We can also learn knowledge of science.
C: I like thrilling stories best, because we can get exciting and thrilling experiences from them when we are reading thrilling stories. I like thrilling stories such as the ones in Liaozhai Zhiyi.
D: I like reading detective stories best, because we can learn skills and abilities of analysing things while enjoying complicated and confusing plots. I like best the detective stories in Sherlock Holmes written by the most famous detective writer, Conan Doyle.
Pre-reading 1. What do you already know about the story The Moonstone? We have learned something about The Moonstone from Warming up and Speaking. It is a very interesting and attractive detective story. It was
written by Wilkie Collins, a great detective story writer in the nineteenth century in Britain. 2. What do you think happens next in the story? I think it is hard to say what will happen next in the story. But I think it is very possible that they finally
find out who has stolen the diamond and the Moonstone will be brought back to Rachel. I have a different one next in the story. The Moonstone won’t come back to Rachel again. So Rachel will get rid of bad luck. She will soon marry her lover and lead a happy life.
Reading Part1 (Para 1): This part mainly talks about how Rachel gets the Moonstone as her present.

Part 5 (Paras 6-9): This part is mainly about how Sergeant Cuff analyses the case.
Part 6 (Para 10): This part tells us Sergeant Cuff finds a vital clue of the theft—a smear in the wet paint on the door.
Words & Phrases 1. considerate towards sb.: careful not to hurt or bring inconvenience to others. e.g. Betty is very considerate towards her husband.
2. might/may have done: show the possibility of something having happened in the past. e.g. He may have lost his way. He might just possibly have lost his keys.
3. in an act of revenge: in order to return an injury. e.g. Terrorists bombed the police station in an act of revenge for the arrests.
4. (from/out of) force of habit: to do some things in a certain way from always having done so in the past e.g. It’s force of habit that gets me out of bed at 7:15 each morning.
Explanation 1. When he died he left the Moonstone to his sister’s daughter, Rachel, in an act of revenge, passing on his bad luck to her.
(1) in an/the act of revenge (for ...) 的行为, 为了报复…”, 相当于in order to revenge ...。
e.g. The man cut down all Mr. Li’s trees at night, in an/the act of revenge for his insult in the day.
(2) pass on ... to someone相当于hand something down to someone表示“把……传递给……”。 e.g. Their ancestors passed on those traditions to the young from generation to generation.
2. Is it coincidence or is it the Moonstone’s bad luck that causes the tension and strange things that happen during the rest of the evening?
Does coincidence or the Moonstone’s bad luck cause the tension and strange things (that happen during the rest of the evening)? 句子中it is... that...是一个强调句式,这里强调句子的主语coincidence or the Moonstone’s bad luck。
It is the good news that makes us all excited. (2) it is ... that ...
is ... that引导名词从句时, it替代后面的从句作形式主语, 后面的名词从句才是真正的主语, 而且引导名词从句的that根据句意还可改用what, who, when, where, how, why, whether等。
请比较: a. It is Miss Gao who will teach us English this term. (强调句式) =Miss Gao will teach us English this term.
b. It is not yet decided who will teach us English this term.(名词从句) =Who will teach us English this term is not yet decided.
3. Rachel is stubborn in resisting his enquiries about the Moonstone to the degree that she makes it seem as if she does not want the mystery to be solved.
(1) 句子中词组be stubborn in doing ... e.g. My father was stubborn in reserving the old house from my great-grandparents.
resisting his enquiries的程度。 (3) 句子中seem as if ...与动词make构成复合宾语结构,即宾语补足语,seem/look/sound ... as if ...
请比较: a. It seems as if the weather will turn out fine soon, though it stormed wildly just now.
b. It seems as if the man were dead when he sleeps lying on the bed.(不具有客观性) 那人躺在床上睡觉的时候,看起来像是死了似的。
Post-reading They are not real entertainers but the followers of the moon god. They came to the party only for an opportunity to take the Moonstone back to India.
He stole the diamond in revenge for loss of the diamond at the party. He took the diamond in revenge for Rachel’s refusal when he asked her to marry him or only for a large amount of money.
She stole the diamond only either from force of habit or to cause a disagreement between Franklin and Rachel. It seems as if he was too enthusiastic to help Mr. Cuff to detect the case.
She was so stubborn in resisting Sergeant Cuff’s enquiries about the diamond. There must be a secret about the Moonstone.
Why did Sergeant Cuff believe that the garment with the paint stain belonged to the thief? Because the door was newly-painted and still wet, when someone went into the room to steal the diamond, he must have opened and
closed the door inthe darkness and have gotten a stain of paint on his or her clothes. So anyone whose clothes had a stain of paint must be the thief.
