  1. Luke’s Eschatological Discourse Eschaton = "the end of time"; or "the time of the end"; from the Greek word for "end" or "last.” Eschatology = the study of, or teachings about, the "end times" and/or the future world beyond the end of normal time. Eschatological = anything having to do with Eschatology or the end of the world.

  2. Luke 21:7-36 • Eschatological discourse, that Jesus gives in response to the disciples' question: “Teacher, when will this be, and what will be the sign when this is about to take place” (Luke 21:7)

  3. Overview • Signs before the end (Luke 21:7-11) False prophets will claim to be God • Persecutions foretold (Luke 21:12-19) Jesus’ followers will be persecuted before the end

  4. Overview (cont.) • The Desolating Sacrilege (Luke 21:20-24) Distress of nations and people • Conclusion: Keep Watch (Luke 21:34-36) Warning of spontaneous coming of Christ

  5. NT Similarities • Luke’s discourse is very similar to Mathew’s • Luke and Mark only share one line exclusively: Lk 21:8 and Mk 13:6 • Lk omits Mt 24:17-25 • Mk and Mt are almost the same, unlike Luke who adds a lot.

  7. Luke’s Message Main message: watch for the coming of God, and be prepared for the troubles that will accompany God’s arrival. Luke emphasizes the destruction that will occur.
