  3. VEF Minox In 1937, the State Electrotechnical Plant (VEF) launched production of the first miniature camera in the world, VEF Minox. It was invented by Valters Caps from Riga. VEF Minox was a completely new kind of camera. Due to its simplicity and easy use, it facilitated amateur photography and also opened the doors to new opportunities. This miniature camera allows achieving a precise and well-contrasted picture from the distance of 20 cm without any additional auxiliaries. Creation and production of Minox was an event of great significance in Latvia, but it was also a revolution in the global photoindustry.

  4. Ftorafur Anti-cancer preparation. A substance being studied in the treatment of some types of cancer. Ftorafur is used for the treatment of alimentary canal tumours as well as for the treatment of breast cancer, several forms of ovary and brain tumours and liver cancer; it is used in combination with other chemical anticancer preparations, in combination with the surgical method and ray therapy. It allows to prolong the length of a lifetime of the operated cancer patients.

In recent years, Finnshave consistently ranked Nokia as one of the best Finnish brands. The Nokiabrand, valued at $34.9 billion, is listed as the fifth most valuable global brand in the InterbrandBest Global Brands list of 2009 (first non-US company).

  7. Linux Linux is a generic term referring to Unix-like computer operating systems based on the Linux kernel. Their development is one of the most prominent examples of free and open source software collaborationLinux can be installed on a wide variety of computer hardware, ranging from embedded devices such as mobile phones, smartphones and wristwatches to mainframes and supercomputers. The name "Linux" comes from the Linux kernel, originally written in 1991 by LinusTorvalds. The main supporting Userland in the form of system tools and libraries from the GNU Project (announced in 1983 by Richard Stallman) is the basis for the Free Software Foundation's preferred name GNU/Linux.

  8. Sauna The Finnish sauna is a substantial part of Finnish culture. There are five million inhabitants and over two million saunas in Finland - an average of one per household. For Finnish people the sauna is a place to relax in with friends and family, and a place for physical and mental relaxation as well. Finns think of saunas not as a luxury, but as a necessity. Before the rise of public health care and nursery facilities, almost all Finnish mothers gave birth in saunas.
