Campus Compact History • Established in 1985 by four university presidents in Rhode Island • The 34th state Compact office was recently established. • Currently more than 1100 member colleges and universities • Educating citizens. Building communities.
Indiana Campus Compact History • Founded in 1993 by students with presidential support • Initially six institutions, ICC has grown to 45 member colleges and universities • All Indiana public institutions are currently part of ICC
Indiana Campus Compact Mission Indiana Campus Compact (ICC) is a network of college campuses involving students, faculty and staff in service-learning and civic engagement in order to educate citizens, prepare tomorrow’s leaders, and contribute to the quality of life of America’s communities. ICC supports the integration of service-learning and civic engagement into campus culture by facilitating collaborations, sponsoring programs, sharing best practices, and promoting public awareness of higher education’s role in graduating well-informed, engaged citizens.

Civic engagement can mean… • Reading the paper or watching the news each day; • Going to a public meeting – and better yet, speaking! • Volunteering for a non-profit organization or activity; • Running for office – and better yet, winning! • Volunteering for your issue or faith-based organization; • Serving on a public board or commission, or as the member of a club or service organization promoting service or the “public good”. Just to name a few…
Why civic engagement? • Engagement is part of the Ivy Tech mission • responsibility as a Community College • Accreditation • > %90 of our students remain in community after graduation • Image enhancement • Strengthen bonds with community partners • Service learning has a positive impact on soft skills, academic learning and career development for students

Service learning • An active learning experience formally incorporated in the curriculum of each academic program. • It combines community service with preparation and reflection, and it emphasizes an understanding of civic responsibility.
Volunteerism • A decision made by an individual to give time and effort to a non-profit, civic, or faith-based group, or to any organization that provides a community service.
Community Involvement • Active participation in the public life of our service area in a planned, informed, committed and constructive manner where participation supports the common good of the community and the institutional mission of Ivy Tech Community College.
