What is a proverb? • Heb: mashal = comparison, analogy (paghambing ng dalawang bagay) Pr 25:25 Like cold water to a weary soul is good news from a distant land. Pr 12:4 A wife of noble character is her husband’s crown, but a disgraceful wife is like decay in his bones.
The Power of Proverbs • God created a world of order • Rational rule – to prevent disorder • Foolishness is disorder in a person’s being • Wisdom tells us “The heart of a fool is not right..” so Proverbs keeps us from foolishness of heart and action
True Wisdom is ultimately… • Not dependent on education • Not dependent on physical age • Not dependent on wealth • Not dependent on family background • Not dependent on work situation • Not dependent on church environment

Sample proverbs • Pr 16:9 In his heart a man plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps. • Pr 19:21 Many are the plans in a man’s heart, but it is the LORD'S purpose that prevails. • Pr 22:15 Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline will drive it far from him. • Pr 22:17 Pay attention and listen to the sayings of the wise; apply your heart to what I teach.
Proverbs 27:14: If a man loudly blesses his neighbor early in the morning, it will be taken as a curse. • Proverbs 10:19: When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise. • Proverbs 27:5-6: Better is open rebuke than hidden love. Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses.
