  12. Learning Target • I will understand how and why China has attempted to deal the growth of its population.

  13. population growth • Mao was the communist leader of China from 1946-1976 • Mao wanted China to become more developed • Woman usually had 4 or 5 children • Because of droughts, China could not support its population

  14. Solution 1: Slow the population growth • What would happen under this policy? • In 1979, China began the one-child policy • Married couples were limited to ONE child • The government rewarded those that followed the policy and punished those that did not • Punishments included fines • It is more about rewards now • Rural areas and some ethnic groups are allowed two children

  15. Solution 1: Slow the population growth • What are the costs of the plan: • People don’t want to be told how many children to have • Chinese families prefer having sons • Some couples chose to end a pregnancy if they know the child is a girl (this is illegal but still happens) • Fewer children to care for older family members (this is the traditions) • More men than women, so men must have a really good job to get a wife

  16. Solution 1: Slow the population growth • What are the benefits of this plan? • Reduced the strain on resources like food and water • Reduced unemployment • Children tend to be healthier • Women have more time for a carreer

  17. Solution 2: Provide more clean energy • What would happen under this policy? • Chinese use lots of energy and pollution is a major problem • China wants to use hydroelectric power- power from water flowing through dams • Build the world’s largest dam, Three Gorges

  18. Solution 2: Provide more clean energy • What are the costs of the plan: • The area behind the dam will be flooded • Flooded the homes of 1 million people • The people were forced to move before the dam was finished • Changed the ecosystem and animals lose their habitat • Dam is on an earthquake fault and could make a major earthquake more likely

  19. Solution 2: Provide more clean energy • What are the benefits of this plan? • Dams are a modification to the environment to control flooding and create electricity • It makes the river easier to travel

  20. Solution 3: Promote economic growth • What would happen under this policy? • Under communism, businesses from other countries could not be in China • After Mao died, the new leaders wanted foreign businesses in China • Businesses did not want to come because the government controled everything, the businesses wanted freedom. • Govt created Special Economic Zones- areas that have special economic laws and are more like a free-market economy

  21. Solution 3: Promote economic growth • What are the costs of the plan: • It created an income gap- the rich get richer, and the poor get poorer • When there are more poor people, there is more crime

  22. Solution 3: Promote economic growth • What are the benefits of this plan? • Brought economic growth to China • Created millions of new jobs • Increased the standard of living- how well people can live with a normal job

  23. New vocab words to add: • geography • hydroelectric power- power from water flowing through dams • Economics • created Special Economic Zones- areas that have special economic laws and are more like a free-market economy • income gap- the rich get richer, and the poor get poorer

  24. Group Work and Personal Reflection Notebook Pg 36 Group Solution (Top of Page) • With your group, determine a solution for the issues created by population growth. Be prepared to support your answers. Personal Reflection (Bottom Of Page) • How might your life be different if the population of America became to big? How would you survive? Ingenuity
