The Fall of Communism • With the collapse of the Soviet Union and the failure of communism in the early 1990s, the Yugoslavian regime also toppled. • The various ethnic and religious groups of Yugoslavia began to declare their independence: Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Macedonia, and Montenegro were formed
Not a peaceful process • War broke out when the Serbian regime out of Belgrade attempted to used military force to reestablish its influence. Without Soviet backing, it failed. • There was also infighting between Christians and Muslims in Bosnia. This Serbian dictator Milosevic later died in prison just before having to face the international court in the Hague
Intervention from the West • The U.S. and its NATO allies eventually bombed the Serbian regime in Belgrade to put an end to the conflict and allow the newly formed countries to enjoy their independence. The NATO alliance of the West
