What is Peer Education People learning from others with backgrounds and/or age similar to their own. A peer education relationship is one of equals, not one where the teacher has all the knowledge or authority and the learner has none.
The role of Peer Educator • Help the group define theirconcerns and seek solutions through the mutual sharing of information and experiences. • Be a role model • Empathize and understand the emotions, thoughts, feelings, language of participants • Be open minded and a good listener
Why use Peer Education • Young people appreciate and are influenced in positive ways by their peers • It is a more fun way to learn • It can give participants legitimacy to talk more freely • Participants feel more empowered and develop confidence Peer Educators: • Serving as a peer educator provides a rewarding opportunity to young people to develop their leadership skills
