Common Daily Routines Students are to be quiet in the hallways and completing academic assignments. Students are given the opportunity to use the bathroom before entering the classroom and are taken to the bathroom after lunch. Afterwards students can use their hall passes; they receive nine per quarter. Upon entering classrooms students are to gather their supplies and put up their book bags. Students are required to have their agendas on their desks so teachers can check for parent signatures and document behaviors. Daily, before leaving classrooms students are given time to write down their homework and ask questions.
Agendas The purpose of the agenda is to teach students life long organizational skills and to be held accountable for their work by parents and teachers. Students are required to jot down assignments daily and parents are expected to review homework and sign agendas each night. Teachers will communicate with parents by documenting infractions and positive behaviors. Please do not sign agendas for the entire week.
Binders! Please help students keep their binders neat and organized. Binder covers should be decorated. Binder dividers are organized by subject with no loose papers. Binder pouches should contain: 2 pencils (no mechanical pencils), 2 pens, 2 highlighters, 1 big eraser,and glue or scissors. Cleaned out consistently, but do not throw away any academic work. Binders will be checked and graded quarterly.
English Language Arts Fifth Grade English Language Arts (ELA) is more that just reading and writing. It includes skills like speaking, listening, and viewing as well. ELA offers us a way to communicate. Through ELA, your child can apply what she/he learns to solve real problems at home, at school and in the community. This Year our 5th Graders have a huge responsibility to apply what they know and what they will be taught.
Mathematics = +,%,<,>,/,$, variables, decimals, fractions... • Must Do’s. = Keep an organized notebook, write class notes, study math facts and study/review Daily Math Concepts from class that day. = 30 minutes a day. • *All MAth Projects will be announced a Month in advance. They will be mostly computer based. • Ideas that are under construction: MAth Tutoring and MAth Club. • My teacher page has online Math help and Math sites • Parents are vital to our students success, so please initiate Math thinking and behaviors when you are out and about at the grocery store, fast food, cleaning the kitchen...
Science Science will have a project for each unit. Students will receive the assignment in the beginning of the unit and it is due at the end of the unit. Complete the study assignment for extra credit. Study 30 minutes 3 times a week and document it. Its that easy! The Science fair project will count as several grades. Students should start their project in November. Information will be sent home when it is time to begin. The project will be due in January.
Social Studies Welcome to fifth grade social studies! Our goal is to help students become productive citizens. This year we will be studying the following units: Connecting Themes, Effective Citizenship, Civil War, Reconstruction, Industrial Revolution,WW1, the Jazz Age & The Great Depression, WW2, The Cold War, The Civil Rights Movement, 9/11, and Effective Citizenship Conclusion. This year we will complete poster projects, participate in mock trials, historic news broadcasts, and a Civil War Wax museum. Our classroom will bring social studies alive through drama..
Writing We will write narratives, informational, and opinion essays. Students will complete additional writing assignments in each core subject. At the end of each unit students will complete a performance task.
Grading Policy 100-90% - A 89-80% - B 79-75% - C 74--70% - D 69% and below – F You will earn grades in the following areas: Classwork Homework Quiz/Test/Presentations. Weekly grades on Mondays. Homework Policy English Language Arts/Math homework is assigned on Mondays and Wednesdays Science and Social Studies homework is assigned on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Homework will be assigned on Fridays as needed. Projects, essays, and presentations will be assigned in advance and students are expected to work on them at home. Family Emergency Passes: went home for Mrs. Henderson’s class. You can use it for homework only not incomplete classwork that was to be completed at home or projects.
Testing Schedule Iready diagnostic test BOY. MOY. EOY We are currently testing until 9/2/16. I-ready tests are used to determine the student’s lexile scores for reading comprehension and quantile scores for math. This test will determine if a student is operating on a higher or lower grade level, this data will be used when planning lessons and remediation. Student Learning Objectives (SLOs) August 8- August 22nd Georgia Milestones (GMAS) April 17-21. Students must pass to be promoted to grade 6. Unit Exams in each subject. Dates are TBA.

Math Strategies Constructed Response
Textbooks ELA- Unfortunately, every student must have their reading book daily due to there not being enough books. Math- Mrs. Knox checked out a class set for student use. Please leave books at home. Science- Mrs. Henderson allows students to leave their books in her classroom. Social Studies- please leave books at home,unless we have an open book test. Library Books- students will visit the library in their ELA class. Students are able to check out four books at a time, but only one can remain in their bookbags.
Supplies Two 1 and one half inch binders or 1 four inch binder Four notebooks and folders/dividers. One package of wide ruled paper. Pencils, pens, highlighters, and colored pencils/markers. 1 package of copy paper. Replacement notebooks before winter break.
Volunteers-training today! 8/25 at 5:00 pm! Volunteers are welcome at Deer Chase Potential volunteers are required to complete training with Richmond County. Please see our parent facilitator for more information.
Discipline Positive behavior will be rewarded quarterly with a PBIS party during the school day. Negative behavior will be documented in student agendas and points will be deducted from daily conduct grades.
