SAINT- QUEEN JADWIGA ‘DIGITAL TALES IN OUR COUNTRY’ eTWINNING
Queen Jadwiga was the youngest daughter of Louis I of Hungaryand of Elizabeth of Bosnia .In 1384 Jadwiga was officially crowned "king" of Poland (Polish law had no provision for a female ruler). Her coronation took place at the Wawel Cathedral in Krakow.
There are many legends that correspond to the Queen Jadwiga. We would like to present two of them. First one is the well-known legend connected with Świątniki Górne - once called “Górki”
It says that Queen Jadwiga coming from Hungary to Kraków saw the city for the very first time from the mountain of Świątniki, and that a broken carriage was fixed by local blacksmiths.
The Queen was very tired and she wanted to rest so she decided to spend the night in the village. People were very happy, all of them wanted to see the Queen and show the respect for her.
The Queen wanted to show her gratefulness for villigers ‘ hospitality. Świątniki dwellers were delegated by her to service the Wawel Cathedral. Initially 12 peasants were placed there.
In time, as the Cathedral developed, also other villagers were delegated to work there. The church duties involved cleaning (washing, scrubbing, sweeping), Świątniki dwellers were opening and closing the church, protecting the vault, ringing the bells (e.g. 12 people are needed to start Sigismund Bell), showing travelers round the graves. Probably, the duties of the inhabitants of Świątniki included attending to and guarding chapels and the vault – Wawel Klucznica, and showing visitors round the Wawel Cathedral.
For years villagers from Świątniki were coming to attend to the Cathedral, taking turns every week, and were staying then in a room prepared specially for them, under the Sigismund Tower. Acting as Assistance to God’s Service they were wearing appropriate, long, dark outfits with capes.
The second legend is about the little foot of Queen Jadwiga.
According to the legend while passing together with her court by the Church na Piasku that was being built at that time, Jadwiga noticed that one of the builders was very sad. She asked him for the reason and learnt that he had no money for the physician to bring relief to his very ill wife. The Queen promised to help: she set her foot on a stone, removed the golden clasp from her slipper, and offered it to the stonemason.
When she left, the workers noticed that pressed in the stone, as if in soft clay, was the trace of her foot. Together they used their chisels to remove the stone from the ground, and carved on it the date of the event – AD 1390 – and placed the stone in the wall of the church, where it can be seen to commemorate Queen Jadwiga’s good heart.
The Queen Jadwiga died in the age of 25, in 1399. In 1987 Queen Jadwiga was beatified and in 1997 Pope John Paul II canonized her in Krakow. She became the patron of ŚwiątnikiGórne on 8th June 2014.
