European ITS Standardization Context • Needs to serve Societal & Business objectives Societal Context Societal Objective (S.O) Road Safety • Almost 40,000 deaths on road (EU 27) • 1.7 Million injured persons (EU 27) Traffic Efficiency Management = • 10% of EU road network dayly congested • 12% of EU CO2 emission from vehicles Business Objective Thresolds Deployment strategy based on a Pack of services: • Enabling medium / long term satisfaction of S.O ROI • While ensuring some short term stakeholders’ ROI

Conclusion / Recommendations • Need of a Public – Private Partnership for the development of standards through an efficient CEN – ETSI Co-operation. • A required Minimum Set of Standards shall ensure interoperability accross Europe. • European Standardization shall be in line with the European co-operative system deployment strategy. • International harmonization is required. But Europe shall be able to develop a consistent and stable offer to put in the balance. This does not preclude some early convergence work.
