Principles of Development Erik Erikson - theory is based on ego identity
Five Assumptions • 1- People, in general have the same basic needs • 2- Personal development occurs in response to these needs • 3- Development proceeds in stages • 4- Movement through the stages reflects changes in an individual’s motivation • 5- Each stage is characterized by a psychosocial challenge that presents opportunities for development Reference: Erik Erikson’s Theory of Psycologoical Development http://eltmasters.blogspot.com/2012/11/erik-eriksons-theory-of-psychological.html
The Nature of Complex Learning Look back at assumptions 3 and 4 for Psychosocial Development: 3- Development proceeds in stages *Must progress through each stages 4- Movement through the stages reflects changes in an individual’s motivation *Stages build upon themselves *A weak stage development leads to struggles with later stages
Principles of Instruction • Erikson was interested in psychosocial development of children • Studied children from different cultures and developed his theory • Society and culture play important roles in cognitive development • Learning takes place through psychosocial stages • Children develop in societies expectation, prohibitions, and prejudices “Children love and want to be loved and they very much prefer the joy of accomplishment to the triumph of hateful failure. Do not mistake a child for his symptom” Erik Erikson
Components of Instruction • Early childhood education approaches are developed by Erikson’s theory. • Erikson’s analysis of children’s behavior and social interactions provides tools for designing instruction. • Understanding Erikson’s theory explains diversity of learners. • Applying psychosocial development in the classroom provides a positive learning environment.
Designing Instruction for Complex Skills • Determine skills to be taught • Clearly specify behavior or skill to be learned • Teach the steps in the procedure • Provide positive guidance and feedback • This is key for the learners virtue, according to the 8 stages, to have proper development and not end in a crisis.
Educational Application • Classroom Issues: • Diversity • Learning Environment • Resolution: • Understand the needs of the learner • Reflect on the learners prior development
