Energy Efficiency Team Donnie Austin Masaaki Atsuta Dave Russell Matt Selvey Brian Waller HFH Members • Web / Architectural Team • Jimmy Johnson • Lisa Major • Nick Henthorn • Prathima Venkatesan Dave Russell
Arch/Web Team Nick Henthorn
Purpose Store input for cost analysis spreadsheet Allow for new spreadsheets to be generated as prices in materials fluctuate. Calculate quantities of building materials. Future Plans Link database with spreadsheet Materials List Nick Henthorn
Materials List Input Nick Henthorn
Materials List Output Nick Henthorn
HFH Web Page • Home Selection Guide • Floor plan • Outdoor view • Utility/electric plan • Home Construction Guide • Volunteer tutorials • Home Efficiency options • Results of Energy Team analysis Nick Henthorn
Purpose Track inventory and donors in the Habitat resale store Increase the organization and maintainability of the resale store Status Completely functional Waiting to be integrated Point of Sales Database Prathima Venkatesan
Resale Store • Resale store sells donated building materials not used by Habitat • System must be intuitive so volunteers can be quickly trained Prathima Venkatesan
POS Database and Overview • Keep track of donated and sold materials • Donor name • Item donated • Item type • Quantity • Cost estimation • Future additions to the database • Bar-coding system • Label printing system Prathima Venkatesan
Energy Team Projects • Set-back Thermostat • Thermal Imaging Scan • CO Testing • Past Projects and Implementations Donnie Austin
Set-Back Thermostat • Programmable thermostats can lower energy use in home • Modeled in Energy-10 software package Donnie Austin
Set-Back Thermostat Donnie Austin
Thermal Imaging Scan • Requested by Habitat for Humanity of Lafayette to look at effects of changing insulation and drywall materials • Two-story rehab house on Green Street evaluated with new and old wall materials Donnie Austin
Thermal Imaging Scan • Slight improvement found (1-2°F) in walls • Heat loss through windows, doors and corners (common) Donnie Austin
Carbon Monoxide Testing • Problem • Habitat was concerned that the design of the house was causing a problem with CO build up • Dryer Exhaust may create a vacuum • Hot water heater has an open flue • House too ‘tight’ Donnie Austin
Carbon Monoxide Testing • Testing • Tested two houses • Max CO level was 3ppm • Max allowable concentration in living area is 9ppm (ASHRAE) • Testing concluded no CO problem in design Donnie Austin
Carbon Monoxide Testing • Conclusion • Possible for dryer to cause this problem • If appliances are operating correctly and efficiently, no CO will build up Donnie Austin
Past Projects and Implementation • Set-back thermostats in place • Central air installed in all new homes Donnie Austin
Team Conclusions Energy Team • Setback Thermostat: • $50 - $80 savings a year • CO Testing • No problem • Thermal Image Scanning • Great ability for the future Brian Waller
Team Conclusions Arch/Web Team • POS Database • Continuing next semester to completion • Materials List • Continually updated corresponding to each house • Tutorials • Updated, revised, and improved next semester Brian Waller
Habitat International • Presented to Habitat International • Introduce EPICS and our capabilities to Habitat International • Very receptive • Will receive new projects Brian Waller
