Inverse variation guided notes

Inverse variation guided notes. The formula for inverse variation can be written as y=k/x where k is the constant of variation. In other words: * As X increases in value, Y decreases or * As X decreases in value, Y increases.

  1. Inverse variation guided notes The formula for inverse variation can be written as y=k/x where k is the constant of variation. In other words: * As X increases in value, Y decreases or * As X decreases in value, Y increases.

  2. Graph of inverse variationNotice how the line curves and never touches an axis!

  3. Steps for solving inverse variation 1. Start with the direct variation equation y = k/x • Substitute for x and y • Solve for k • Substitute the value of k and write the equation

  4. Let’s go step by step • Find the equation of variation where y varies inversely as x. Y= 47 when x=.8 Y=k/x write the equation 47=k/.8 substitute for x and y 37.6 = k solve for k Y=37.6x re-write the equation

  5. Look!!! • Follow that same pattern when solving all inverse variation problems! • You already know how to solve one step equations, so apply that knowledge here. Undo division with multiplication!!

  6. Practice Problems  X varies inversely with Y in all of these problems. Use the formula to solve then re-write the equation • If x=8 when y=2 find K • If y=43 when x= 6 find K • If x=5 when y=7, find K • If x=24 when y=3 find K
