1. The place of the subject of sustainability/ sustainable development in the Saxon geography syllabus Selection of subject areas which are treated with regard to sustainability/sustainable development (class 5 – 9): • class 5: brown coal mining; recultivation; structural change of old industrialised areas • class 6: protection of coast; mass tourism in the Alps/around the Mediterranean Sea • class 7: the Sahel; petroleum as an economical and political factor • class 8: China and the population growth; land use at Lake Aral • class 9: space analysis of Amazonia; metropolisation Kerstin Bräuer

3.2. Realisation of the content Expert group 1: The BMW works in the north of Leipzig • Task: Examine how the guiding principle of sustainability as part of the company strategy of the BMW Group is realised at the new production plant in the north of Leipzig. Expert group 3: Society – urban renewal in the east of Leipzig • Task: Grasp the reasons for the necessity of different development programmes for the east of Leipzig. Expert group 4: Big sports events and sustainability • Task: Analyse the realisation of the guiding principle of sustainability in the concept for Leipzig’s international application for the Olympic Games 2012. 4. Summary • Remarks: - very committed independent work of the students - development of team spirit - achieved sensitisation for the topic of sustainability including the local Agenda 21 → realisation of personal responsibility for resources → using the right to have to say in the decision during the planning phase of the measures • Project week as a sensible alternative or in order to deepen the subject matter Kerstin Bräuer
