Benefits of biodiversity • Some trees that are cut for paper in unsustainable ways are very large and are in biologically diverse forests. • Take this opportunity to see how many types of trees you can find on your school property. What are the benefits of having a biologically diverse area?
Measuring Up • With a partner or small group, select a tree on the schools property. You will be able to figure out how many newspapers that tree can make. You will need to measure the height and the circumference of this tree. You will need: • String • Ruler • Tape Measure • Student Sheet • Newspaper
What to do • Get the circumference of the tree at the height of your chest. What would be the best way to do this?
Measure the height • Stand at the base of the tree with your teammate. • Hold the ruler and back away from the tree. Hold the ruler vertically with your arm straight. Back up until the ruler and the tree seem to be the same size. You may want to close one eye to help.
Line up the bottom of the ruler with the bottom of the tree and twist your wrist 90 so that the ruler is now parallel with the ground.
Measure how far your teammate walked. That is how tall the tree is! Fill in both the height and circumference of your tree before coming back inside. Have your teammate walk to the tip of the ruler
Paper Counting How many different types of paper do you use? Keep track for 1 day on your paper tracker sheet.
