WHAT IS A VARIABLE? • A variable is an object, event, idea, feeling, time period, or any other type of category you are trying to measure. • Variables are often represented by letters. (x, y, z…etc)
WHAT IS AN INDEPENDENT VARIABLE? • It is a variable that stands alone and isn't changed by the other variables you are trying to measure • you are trying to see if the independent variable causes some kind of change in the other variables • Are varied or manipulated by the researcher
DEPENDENT VARIABLES • It is something that depends on other factors • is the response that is measured. • For example, a test score could be a dependent variable because it could change depending on several factors such as how much you studied, how much sleep you got the night before you took the test, or even how hungry you were when you took it.
Independent vs Dependent (Independent variable) causes a change in (Dependent Variable) and it isn't possible that (Dependent Variable) could cause a change in (Independent Variable).
EXAMPLES • Annabelle and Nashawn are baking cookies to sell at their bake sale. The amount of money they will be able to raise for their school depends on the number of cookies they bake? m = the amount of money they will be able to raise C = the number of cookies they bake C (the number of cookies they bake) is the independent variable m (the amount of money they will be able to raise is the dependent variable
Examples • The electric company charges its customers based on usage. The quantity of electricity consumed determines the billing amount. q = the quantity of electricity consumed b= the billing amount q is the independent variable and b is the dependent variable
Examples • Kyle goes running every morning. The farther he runs, the more calories he burns during the run d = the distance Kuntaruns c= the number of calories Kunta burns during the C is the dependent variable and d is the independent variable
Examples • Edgar is having the carpets in his house cleaned. The cost of the cleaning is calculated from the area of the carpets. c = the cost of the cleaning a = the area of the carpets a is the independent variable c is the dependent variable
