The Atmosphere Properties
The air around us • Atmosphere – envelope of gases that surround the Earth. • Weather – refers to the current conditions of the atmosphere. • Climate – refers to the long term weather patterns.
Composition of the Atmosphere • Nitrogen (N₂) – 78% • Necessary for living things to grow. • We cannot use it directly from the air. • We get it by eating plants that take it in from the air • Oxygen (O₂) 21% • Used by plants and animals to produce energy in our bodies. • Other gases in the atmosphere • Carbon dioxide (CO₂) is used by green plants to make their food • Water Vapor (H₂O) is water in a gas form. The amount in the atmosphere determines how “wet” the air is • Solid particles in the atmosphere include dust, pollen, and smoke. • They affect the air quality
Air Pressure • Because air is made of atoms it causes the air to be able to push on the earth. • Depends on the density of the air. • More dense air = more pressure • Less dense air = less pressure • Dry air is more dense than moist air • Cold air is more dense than hot air • Measured using a barometer
