What is the meaning of Ketones and how does it affect Diabetic Patients?
Ketones are acids that are produced when your body breaks down fat.
If you have high blood sugar, too, ketones mean that you do not have enough insulin in your body to keep fat from breaking down. • Your body gets rid of ketones in your urine, so it is important to drink lots of fluids- if ketones are present. • If ketones are produced more quickly than your kidneys can get rid of them, they will accumulate in your blood and cause nausea and vomiting. HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE
It is important to try to get rid of ketones before you get to this point, because nausea and vomiting can lead to dehydration and acidosis (too much acid in your blood). • This can result in a vicious cycle in which vomiting leads to dehydration, which makes the ketoacidosis worse, which, in turn, causes more vomiting. At this point, you often need to be hospitalized and treated with intravenous (IV) fluids and insulin to break the cycle. • The only way to keep ketones from forming is to take extra insulin. Some people are very sensitive to insulin and only take small doses, but others are taking much larger doses. • The dose of short-acting insulin that you will take to treat your ketones depends on your daily insult talk to your doctor or diabetes educator to determine your correct dose.
