  2. Before knowing about Rheumatoid Arthritis, we should know what is Arthritis itself. Arthritis in simple language is swelling and pain in joints. Joint pain without major swelling may be called as Arthralgia. Rheumatoid Arthritis is a type of arthritis which is more commonly seen in females (mostly during time of hormone changes like menopause, lactation and pregnancy). It can affect in any age but more commonly seen in postmenopausal female. It is also more common in people who use tobacco in any form like chewing or smoking.

  3. Rheumatoid arthritis is diagnosed mainly by patient symptoms and doctor’s examination, blood tests are supportive not diagnostic. Common blood tests for Rheumatoid Arthritis are RA factor and Anti CCP antibody. These tests are important along with clinical symptoms. Sometimes Rheumatoid Arthritis is diagnosed in absence of positive blood test and sometimes not diagnosed in positive blood test. But if a patient is having symptoms along with positive blood symptoms the disease is considered somewhat severe.

  4. Main symptom of Rheumatoid Arthritis is joint pain and most commonly small joints of hands and foot are affected. Along with joint pain, stiffness in early morning is an important sign which is usually more than 30-45 min. Normally back is not affected in Rheumatoid Arthritis. In some patients, along with joints other organs like lungs, eyes, blood vessels are affected. This may present as prolonged cough, red eye, skin rash/ulcer, decreased sensation of foot.

Rheumatoid Arthritis Treatment is possible but treatment is prolonged. Drugs which are used in arthritis are called as DMARD (Disease modifying anti Rheumatic drugs) and for decreasing pain anti inflammatory like pain killers and steroids are used. Steroids and pain killers are used for shorter period preferably initially to decrease pain. Main target of Arthritis treatmentis to prevent joint damage and disease progression.
