Preparedenessat Home • Establish family earthquake plan • Practice drills • Choose out-of-district friend/relative • Person family members can contact to report whereabouts & conditions • Learn first aid/CPR • Organize neighborhood to be self-sufficient after an earthquake • Prepare earthquake emergency kit
General Preparedeness • Secure pictures and other hanging objects • Secure water coolers /heaters • Wrench near emergency gas shut off • Secure heavy items (I,e; Printer, Photocopier, large shelves etc.) • Know safe spots in every room • Work stations, large desks, seating tables • Know dangerous spots in every floor • Glass windows, hanging objects, Electrical points • hazardous materials, IT & utility rooms etc
Duringearthquake - Indoor • Stay There! DO NOT Run Outside • Stay calm & remember the phases, “Duck, Cover, and Hold” • Duck – And Look for Cover • Cover – Under a Sturdy Desk or Table • Hold – Onto the Furniture Leg Until Shaking Stops • Face away from windows • Stay clear of tall objects that may topple over • Watch for falling objects
Duringearthquake - Outdoor • Get into the open • Stay clear of buildings & power lines • Do not smoke or light matches or lighters • If driving: • Stop if safe, but stay inside car • Avoid stopping under trees, light posts, power lines, or signs • Stay away from bridges, overpasses & tunnels • On the Beach/Ocean Front • -- Move to higher ground or several hundred yards inland
After Initial Shock • Remain calm & be prepared for aftershocks • Check for injuries & administer first aid to the degree you are trained for • Check for obvious hazards & damage on your floor • Do not turn on or off any lighting or electrical devices • Inform your emergency family contacts though mobile • Follow directions over the building PA system or by the EER • Use emergency supplies if necessary
