10.8 Identify Linear, Quadratic, and Exponential Functions Distinguish quadratic and exponential functions as nonlinear using a graph and/or a table of values. Distinguish between the equations of linear, quadratic, and exponential functions (e.g. function families such as y=x2, y=2x, and y=2x).
Linear Functions Y Is this function linear? y = x + 2 X
Quadratic Functions Y y = x2 + 1 X
Exponential Functions Y y = 2x X
Comparing Functions • Figuring out which it type of function it is is fairly easy from the function and/or the graph, but when you have just the table of values it becomes a little harder.
Writing the equation from the table. • To write the equation first Identify the function and then use the proper formula to help you write it. • Linear y=mx+b
Writing the equation from the table If Exponential use Where x and y come from the table and b is the pattern found.
Writing the equation from the table • Quadratic use Where x and y come from the table.
