Census 2011: Key statistics for a better understanding of Rodrigues What was the population count on 3-4 July 2011? • Present population on Census night: 39,065 • Resident Population: 40,434 Male : 19,904 Female:20,530 • The resident population is a count of all Rodriguans living continuously in the country for 12 months.

Census 2011Key statistics for a better understanding of Rodrigues • Population growth • The population increased more than eightfold over the last 100 years • The population of Rodrigues has increased from 4,829 to 40,434. • From 1983 to 2000, the population was almost stagnant; it increased from 33,082 to 35,779 (2,700 over a period of 17 years).

Population change 2000-2011 The population of Rodrigues increases faster than that of the island of Mauritius Census 2011: Key statistics for a better understanding of Rodrigues Compared to the island of Mauritius, Rodrigues is growing much faster. From 2000 to 2011, the intercensal population of: Rodrigues increased by: 13.0% Mauritius increased only by: 4.7%

  6. Census 2011: Key statistics for a better understanding of Rodrigues • Population Distribution • The proportion of women in the population is on the rise since women live longer than men. • 2000, there were 98 males per 100 females • 2011 the ratio went down to 97 males per 100 females.

Census 2011: Key statistics for a better understanding of Rodrigues • Population Distribution • Elderly population on the rise • Between 2000 and 2011: • Child population aged <15 years increased marginally from 11,149 to 11,798 In terms of proportion, it went down from 31% to 29% • Elderly population aged 60 +went up significantly : from 2,967 to 4,206 In terms of proportion, it increased from 8% to 10%

Census 2011: Key statistics for a better understanding of Rodrigues • Population Distribution Population < 15 for Rodrigues turned out around 29% while for Mauritius, it was 20% 15 -59 for Rodrigues was 60% and for Mauritius , it was around 67% 60+ for Rodrigues around 10% and for Mauritius, it was around 13% Median age rose for Rodrigues increased from 23 to 28 years indicating that the population is gradually ageing.

Census 2011: Key statistics for a better understanding of Rodrigues • Population density – Rodrigues Total land area of 104 Km2 • 2011 – 389 persons/Km2 • For the last 50 years, the population density in Rodrigues has almost double. • The population density for Mauritius: 642 persons/Km2 • Rodrigues can be compared with Moka district in Mauritius (357 per/km 2)
