Word Wednesdays! Time to TALK intelligently!
Do Now • What is the safety concern when you see the electrical symbol? What precautions should you take?
What are we shooting for? • - SWBAT define, depict and use science vocab words in a sentence: mass, weight, and density • - SWBAT Explain that density is the amount of matter (stuff) in a set container (volume)
Mass (m) Draw a picture Definition Use it in a sentence
Mass • (it’s hard to define mass b/c it is so basic) Mass: It is the amount of matter (stuff) something IS. • Symbol of Mass= m • SI Unit=Kilograms (kg) • **Smaller objects are measured in: grams(g)
Weight IS NOT MASS! • Weight: The force of gravity on an object. • Symbol of FORCE= F • SI Unit=Newtons • **This will never be said, or used, or mentioned in ANY WAY in this class! …(weight) till Physics… :)
Do Now What are the two ways you can change your weight? How is it possible to change your mass? How is it possible for gravity to change?

Density: Why things float • Density: Density is the amount of massinside a given volume. • Symbol= ρ (Greek letter “rho”) • Equation: ρ= mass/Volume • SI Unit= g/cm3
Measurement Tools • Highlight (or color) the pictures of the instruments in your lab notebook and fill in the table on the back as we use them in lab don’t work ahead (SLANT)
Measurement Tools 2. Name: Meter Stick(sometimes we use a ruler) Measures: Length of an object SI Unit: meter (m) **We measure small lengths with centimeters (cm)**
Practice! Measure the length of the ice cube Measure the length; width; and height DON’T FORGET UNITS! (cm)
Gift Box Lab • Do the best gifts come in small packages?? • What makes something have a high density? • Can a small box be more dense than a large box? • Poll: Do you think the heaviest box will be the most DENSE? • Yes or No
Procedure • In your notebook: • Make a table • Calculate the volume (multiply L*W*H=cm3) • Calculate the density of your box (ρ=m/V) • List the densities for every box
Answer these questions • What is the density of your box? (g/cm3) • What box was the most dense • Was this surprising to you? Why/Why not?
Do Now • What is the DEFINITION of density? • What is the EQUATION for density? • What are the UNITS for density?

Gift Box Lab--Conclusion • What is the density of your box? (g/cm3) • What box was the most dense • Was this surprising to you? Why/Why not?
