A RICH-likecosmicrayssetup M.Lenti
The RICH prototype • The RICH prototypewasused in 2007 and 2009 test beams in TCC8 • 2 NIM papers out ofthem, p-mseparationdemonstrated • RICH prototype vessel reused in NA62 • Whataboutall the rest (PM flanges, Mirror, mirrorsupport, electronics, etc.)? M.Lenti
Cosmicrayssetup • Trytorecycle part of the RICH prototypefor a didacticcosmicrayssetup • Neon asradiatornotpracticalforcosmics • Useaerogelbricksasradiator • Not a RICH but a proximityfocusingCherenkov detector • Re-use the sphericalmirror in “flat mode” M.Lenti
Cosmicsrayssetup Aerogel PM disk Winston Cones disk “vessel” light tight, not gas tight 40 cm air mirror m M.Lenti
PM disk Electronics Preparation Side wallstobedone Mirrorcradle Winston Cones Align motor Cosmicchariot M.Lenti Closing flange
Aerogel • Matsushita SP-30 (courtesyof Clara MatteuzzifromLHCb), nothydrophobic • 3 bricksof 12x12x1 cm3 each • n=1.03 (qmax = 250 mrad, pm(thesh)=430 MeV/c) • Distaerogel-mirror 40 cm • Rring = 2x40x0.250 = 20 cm (as in test beam) • Nhit 8-10 per cosmicevent M.Lenti
Didacticalstrategy • Align the mirror • Trigger with a coupleofscintillator • ReconstructcosmicraysinducedCherenkov ring • ….. M.Lenti
Conclusions • Attempttoreuse part of the RICH prototype • Minimal work needed (mostofpieces, electronics, DAQ) alreadyavailable • UsefulLabexerciseforstudents • PMsonlytemporarilyavailable (400 used): latertobeinstalled in the NA62 RICH M.Lenti
